LASD Lancaster Station Deputies and Station Personnel to take the 2011 Street Warrior ChallengeThe Street Warrior Challenge event was designed last year to motivate members of the Lancaster Station into some serious training and to challenge their bodies beyond what they normally do. With that said, we have good news and bad news regarding the upcoming 2011 Street Warrior Challenge. The good news is that Lancaster station personnel (prompted by Deputy Mitch Speed and Deputy Dan Gore) were inspired by the Cops 4 Causes Fallen Heroes Initiative and wanted to do something special to honor Dave March and his family. The bad news is that their inspiration will cause many of their partners physical pain! Therefore, the bad news is that the LASD Lancaster Deputies and Station personnel are going to have to push their bodies a little harder in this year’s challenge.Captain Bob Jonsen stated that based on a great suggestion, the decision was made that this year’s challenge would involve running a whole marathon (26.2 miles) on November 6th, competing in a bench press event (pressing a % of your body weight the following week), and finishing a week later with a pull-up event. He stated that he knew this change would have a lot of his personnel saying, “I can’t do a full marathon!” Yet, he stated a wise person once told him, “It’s not that you can’t do it, it’s that you choose not to do it!” Therefore, he stated, "Let’s all CHOOSE to participate together in honor of a worthy cause."To help support our cause, each Lancaster Deputy and Station participant will be obtaining sponsors and asking their friends, family, associates, to sponsor them $1.00 for each mile of the marathon. All of the money Lancaster Deputies and Station personnel independently collect will be donated to the Cops 4 Causes/ LASD Fallen Heroes Initiative.Cops 4 Causes would like to thank Captain Jonsen, Deputy Speed, Deputy Gore and all of the members of the Lancaster Station for their support!

Sheriff Lee Baca Encourages the LASD Family to Support Fallen Heroes

Cops 4 Causes in association with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), has partnered to create a holistic program to support the families of Law Enforcement Officers killed in the line of Duty. This initiative was begun in response to Cops 4 Causes Honorary Board Chairman, Sheriff Lee Baca’s desire to assist the families of fallen heroes who suffer emotionally and financially over time as a result of an in the line of duty death. Although we pride ourselves that law enforcement is family, and as such, we are always the most generous people when member of our family are in need. Unfortunately, there are times when some of our families fall through the cracks. Cops 4 Causes is committed to ensure that the sacrifice our brothers and sisters have paid is not forgotten and that our law enforcement family honors them by protecting what matters most- their families.In addition to launching the largest grass-roots fund raising endeavor undertaken by the LASD family, Cops 4 Causes has created a network of support systems for families that will focus on:• Long-term financial planning:o After the death of a Law Enforcement Officer, Cops 4 Causes will provide a financial consultation (free of charge) to the families of our fallen brothers and sister that will assist them in accounting and developing a long-term financial strategy for the family.• Counseling Services:o For members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Family, Employee Support Services offers counseling services to the family members our fallen brother and sisters leave behind. • Ongoing Support:o Our collective goal for the family is a sustainable emotional and financial recovery. Cops 4 Causes Join's Forces with LASD Motor's to Support the "Police Unity Tour"

On April 1, 2011, Cops 4 Causes and the LASD Motor Units will be hosting a Golf Tournament at the San Dimas Canyon Golf Course. The tournament is scheduled for a 1:30 P.M. “Shotgun start,” with registration beginning at 12 o’clock noon.

In honor of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, Cops 4 Causes has partnered with twelve LASD Motor Units to help raise funds for the Police Unity Tour-Southern California Chapter, in support of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

The cost is $120.00 per person, or $400.00 per foursome, which includes green fees, golf cart, and an Award Ceremony BBQ dinner.

Where the Funds Go:
On May 9, 2011, twelve Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Motor Units, as members of the Police Unity Tour - Southern California Chapter, will escort numerous law enforcement officers from around the country who will bicycle over 300 miles to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC.

The route will be from Somerset, NJ to Philadelphia, PA, and on to Washington DC. On May 13th a candlelight vigil will be held at the Memorial, and the names of the officers who have died in the line of duty in 2010 will be read.

Cops 4 Causes and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department thank you in advance for your generous support in remembering our police heroes who have died in the line of duty and for helping to honor and memorialize their lives.

Cops 4 Causes welcomes back Bret Ernst. Bret is a headliner in the top clubs across the country, and has earned the sought after honor of marquee status on the Sunset Strip.

Ernst will next appear as the host of the new Oxygen Series LOVE GAMES: BAD GIRLS NEED LOVE TOO, premiering March 16, 2010. Bret can also be seen in his own 1/2 hour Comedy Central Presents special, set to air April 16. 2010. After a successful 2009 comedy benefit series with the World Famous Laugh Factory, Cops 4 Causes has partnered with them again to raise money for Special Olympic Southern California, Monday, October 18th, 2010, in Long Beach, California. This special night of comedy will kick off the 2010, International Law Enforcement Torch Run Conference, which host over 1400 law enforcement officers from around the world, who donate their time to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympic Athletes.

Bryan Callen to Appear at Cops 4 Causes, April 8th, Tribute to American Heroes

(April 3, 2010 Los Angeles) Cops 4 Causes announces that Comedian Bryan Callen will join the all-star list of comics set to perform at the April 8th "Comedy Uniting Communities Slute to American Heroes" benefit being held in honor of Sgt. Major Robert J. Cottle, USMC (LAPD SWAT) and Lance Cpl. Rick J Centanni, USMC, at the Laugh Factory, Long Beach. When told about the benefit, Brayn was the first to respond stating, "Count me in!" Cops 4 Causes can not thank him enough for his willingness to participate in our benefits and thanks him for donating his time and talent to our causes.

Bio: Bryan Callen
Born on January 26 in New York, Bryan Callen attended American University before pursuing his comedy career. After trying his hand at stand-up, Callen made his TV debut as a series regular on “MADtv” (1995), which also served as his breakthrough. Callen’s hobbies include karate, boxing, wrestling and fencing. He currently resides in Venice, California.

Callen has appeared on several television series including “Sex and the City,” “7th Heaven,” “Stacked,” “King of Queens,” “Las Vegas,” “Significant Others,” “West Wing,” “CSI,” “Law and Order: SVU,” “NYPD Blue,” “Suddenly Susan,” “Frasier,” and “News Radio,” among others. In addition, Callen has appeared in such feature films as BAD SANTA and OLD SCHOOL and has performed stand up comedy on several TV shows including Late Night with David Letterman.

After spending his first 14 years of his life overseas in countries like India, Pakistan, Greece and Lebanon, Callen finally moved to the USA. He went to high school in Massachusetts and earned his BA in History at the American University in Washington, D.C.

He hopes to make a lot of money someday so he can have a helicopter, servants, and a large entourage which is to include a Giant, acrobats and a pet monkey.

(Los Angeles –April 1, 2010) Cops 4 Causes, responding to the news of the tragic deaths of Marine Sgt Major Robert J. Cottle (LAPD Metropolitan Division/SWAT officer) and Lance Cpl Rick J. Centanni (son of Santa Ana Police Sgt Jon Centanni) announces the “Baker to Vegas Comedy Kick Off Party” fundraiser is being turned into a tribute to honor both men and will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Laugh Factory, Long Beach.

The Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay is an annual law enforcement 21-man relay race that stretches 120 miles from Baker, CA to Las Vegas, Navada.

It has been an exciting past two months of work here at Cops 4 Causes. We have been busy with the re-launch of our website, program development, membership program, and development of our 2010 benefit schedule. In just a few days we will be launching our new website which will offer our visitors a more interactive experience.

We are proud to once again partner with the Jamie Masada and the World Famous Laugh Factory and will be announcing dates for our "Comedy Uniting Communities" benefits. We are also in talks with the Roxy, House of Blues, and the LA Kings and will be sure to keep you posted about new and exciting events.

As the weather starts to warm-up, we look forward to bring together LA's hottest entertainment and our communities all in the name of raising money and awareness for good causes.

A Big Day for the Cops 4 Causes El Salvador Project

Dear Friends of Cops 4 Causes,

Today is the day our stoves arrive in El Salvador! I hope that you will all share in the joy of what we helped to accomplish with the Cops 4 Causes El Salvador project. Although, it seem like it has been some time since we started our project we are happy to announce that our little village in El Salvador will be receiving their stoves later today. After the devastation that has occurred this past week, I am confident that our stoves will put smiles back on the faces of many of our program participants.

In total our efforts helped to purchase 56 stoves for 56 families. We are happy to report that we met the benchmark of 80% of the villagers taking part and completing our program. Because of your support this tiny village now enjoys over 1000 new trees, that will soon bare nuts for them to eat, a cleaner, healthier way to cook, and residents who will benefit from having attended forums on domestic violence, health care, immigration and proper use of their stoves.

For those of you who contributed, be on the lookout for a little package from El Salvador. Thank you again for your generosity.

I hope that this e-mail finds you all well and in good heath. I just wanted to bring you up to date on two great accomplishments for Cops 4 Causes:

Please join me in congratulating our Cops 4 Causes Vice President, Roberta Abner on her "Golden Badge Award". The Golden Badge Foundation recognizes law enforcement officers who contribute to the community. Roberta is being honored for her volunteer service though Special Olympics Southern California as the Torch Run Director, as Vice President of Cops 4 Causes and as a mentor to women. She received her award this past weekend. On a side note, I would like to personnel thank her for mentorship to me, her leadership on our board and for her support.

The second piece of good news is due in large part to a group of USC EML Grad Students and you and thus I hope that you will all share in the joy of what we helped to accomplish with the Cops 4 Causes El Salvador project. Although, it seem like it has been some time since we started our project in El Salvador (remember that things do not work as quickly in developing countries) we are happy to announce that our little village in El Salvador will be receiving their stoves this week. I am also excited to share with you the news of our upcoming “Comedy Uniting Communities” summertime benefit series at the Laugh Factory, Hollywood that will focus on raising money and awareness aimed at helping our returning Veterans, our programs that seek to help inner city youth, promote our International Cop X-Change outreach and fund educational scholarship opportunities for family members of law enforcement professionals who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty.

As we pay tribute to our everyday heroes, it is a great honor to be standing here today, united with members of our Cops 4 Causes Honorary Board. It is my honor to introduce to you the Honorary Board members who are present here today. They are (to my right/left) Los Angeles County Sheriff, Sheriff Lee Baca; Cypress Police Chief Mark Yokoyama.

We are also joined by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Captain Dan Cruz from Men’s Central Jail, the family of our fallen brother, Deputy Juan Able Escalante: His Father Caesar and Mother Ana Marie Escalante, Juan’s wife Celeste and his children Alexander, Marisa and Julian.

All present we have our Board Members - Chief Roberta Abner, LAPD Sgt Jonathan Pinto and LASD Deputy Brook Marshall.

Cops 4 Causes is a law enforcement non-profit organization which is focused on helping people with life-altering disabilities and law enforcement families who have been devastated by life-altering circumstances. Over the past three years Cops 4 Causes has formed a partnership with the arts and entertainment community to create benefits that join law enforcement with the community of people we serve and protect. Our bond with celebrities, musicians, artist and media is a powerful medium that helps us accomplish our mission.

Today we have the distinct pleasure of being joined by another Cops 4 Causes celebrity friend, from the hit TV series The Closer – Please give a warm welcome to actor Robert Gossett.

These Hollywood hero’s have helped us promote deeper relationships with our communities in times of tragic circumstance and to promote unity and healing through their willingness to donate their time, talent and celebrity.
Today we gather to recognize our ability to unite law enforcement and our community members after the tragic death of Deputy Juan Escalante. We owe a special debt of gratitude to the owner of the Laugh Factory, Jamie Masada for opening the World Famous Laugh Factory to us and to Penny Visacara and Monique Moss for helping us produce our “Comedy Uniting Communities” benefit. Because of his deep care and concern for people in need, Cops 4 Causes is able to ensure that every dollar spent on a ticket to our events goes directly to the causes we are supporting.

We also owe a most heartfelt thanks to the host of comedians which have included our good friends Dane Cook, Dom Irrera, Joey Medina, Brian Callen, Chris Reed, Natasha Leggero, the Bornstine Experiment and our very own honorary spokesperson, Wendi-Mclendon Covey, who many of you know best as Reno 911’s “Deputy Clementine Johnson”. Each of these Hollywood heavyweights of comedy has donated their talents to provide us with a memorable night of laughs while helping us to raise funds for people in need.

In choosing where to host our press conference today we selected Men’s Central Jail because of the commitment many of you made to support Cops 4 Causes by attending our benefit.

Your contributions have allowed us to provide $20,000 to Deputy Escalante’s family and his three children who are here with us today.

Today, I will take my flight back to the U.S. Our trip here has been an amazing journey of uniting communities and I look forward to our fostering our new friendship with the local law enforcement and community members of El Salvador.

I came to El Salvador, not being able to speak or understand very much Spanish. However, I am leaving with the clear understanding that love, caring, compassion, laughter, respect, a helping hand and friendship have a universal language and that language is spoken loudest by our actions, handshakes, smile and hugs.

I would like to thank our Peace Corps Volunteer, Chase Anthony for welcoming Cops 4 Causes to El Salvador and for helping us to connect and make new friends. From all of us here at Cops 4 Causes, Thank you!

As our aid mission here draws to a close I our Peace Corps volunteer, Anthony and I board yet another bus. The bus ride to San Salvador is slated to last almost 6 hours but I am in some ways relieved. Upon returning to the states, I will be headed to Sacramento, CA for classes at the University of Southern California (USC) Capitol Campus. The time on the buss will give me sometime to catch up on readings for class. I am also in need of getting back to a cybercafe so that I can catch up on how preparations for our upcoming "Comedy Uniting Communities" benefit at the Laugh Factory, Hollywood are along.

We got in late, but I managed to get a lot of reading done. Tonight we are meeting with some of Anthony's fellow Peace Corps volunteers for dinner to discuss ways that Cops 4 Causes can partner with their projects.

After our dinner planning on how to change the world, we head out to experience the San Salvador nightlife. At the end of the night we end up some place that most of you might be able to figure out.

The guy in the middle is a dead give away. Any takers???

Today was my last day in Cuyusicat. I awoke at 0545 A.M. in order to catch the 0630 A.M. truck ride to Metapan. The past 10 days seem like only seconds in time. I know that I will miss this place, my new friends and the experiences that Cops 4 Causes has had during our stay. What we have started here is nothing short of amazing and I cannot wait to return on our next visit with more members from Cops 4 Causes. Till then we will have a lot of work to do in order to give our new program a firm footing. But I know that it is only a short matter of time till we are able to have a Cops X-Change trip running every 6 months to various developing countries and places around the world.

The air is brisk this morning and the sun is eagerly trying to break through the mist. As we pull away I try catch every last glimpse of the country road that leads to our new home away from home. I catch myself chuckling to myself hearing the rooster that seems to have no since of time crow for the last time. This place is filled with all sorts of little crazy things from flying bugs, to "bravo" (mean) dogs, to cow that roam the streets. Being back in L.A. seems almost foreign. We make our way to Metapan and I am excited about our plans for the day. Before I leave we are headed to Apaneca for the canopy tours.

What an amazing last adventure here. Literally we were zipping through the rain forest, hundreds of feet high above the tree tops.

After an action packed day we retired in a hostel in the city. The weekend here is a huge festa for the whole town. The whole town is buzzing with activity. Live music fills the air and there is food from every corner of El Salvador being cooked up on by the street vendors. We are exhausted by the events of today and tomorrow we head back to the Capital, San Salvador.

If there is one thing that I really miss it is hot showers! In the little township that I have in running water and sewage is a great luxury. I start my day off with a cold shower. When I say shower, what I really mean is standing in a shower, filling a water tub, and pouring a bowl of cold water over my head. There is no running shower here and I find that it is difficult to rinse myself clean of soap.

Washing dishes is done in a very similar way. Somehow doing the dishes seems to be a lot more enjoyable than showing.

But not half as much fun as sleeping inside a net to keep the large flying bugs away from you at night:

Even without the comforts of home, I find my surrounding enchanting. The people, places and experiences over the last 10 days are memories that I will have for a lifetime. In many ways I feel like I have a new home with a community of new familia. I am sadden to think that our trip is almost over, yet I am filled with great hope and expectation for what Cops 4 Causes contributions will yield.

Today I will spend my last day in English class with the youth. We have planned an afternoon of team and trust building challenges for our class. In many ways the lessons we are trying to instill with these games are the same we with to instill with our programs. I am confident that we have been a success and that our bonds of teamwork and trust will continue to grow. Like the Salvadoran farmers, who have planted there corn with hopes for a bountiful harvest in August, Cops 4 Causes has planted the seeds of friendship and hope.

Today brings with it many opportunities to interact with the governmental organizations. Our first stop is to see meet again with the Police Chief to finalize their commitment to taking part in our outreach programs. We are welcomed in with great enthusiasm and curious excitement. As we being to chat, I find that the bonds of public service seem to bridge the language barrier. As we continue to chat I believe that we both find that we have a great deal in common. Although we do not share a common language, our conversation is exactly the type of conversation two cops from anywhere in the U.S. would have.

I am surprised to learn that most police officer in Metapan really do give up a great deal in order to be officers. I am told that the selection process is very similar to our process of testing, boards and selection. However, upon becoming police officers I find that they must make great sacrifices in order to keep their post. In many cases, the officers here work 10 hours a days and then live away from their loved ones 4-5 days a week. Finally, many of the police officers commute as much as 2-3 hours just to reach their station.

Prior to leaving I present the police department with a letter welcoming them to Cops 4 Causes. I also introduce them to an American law enforcement custom of trading patches. Just a few days prior we has also met with a local fire department and has also introduced them to the same custom.

I am amazed at he stamina of the young men here and how much of their life is spent working in the fields. Today, I wake up at 5:45 A.M. I learn that they wake at 4:30 A.M. and go to work in the field for 8-10 hours. They return for a short lunch break around 10:30 A.M. and then return to the stables in the afternoon in order to take care of the cattle. Upon finishing their daily task they then return home for a light dinner and then spend time with the other town folks. I believe that most people would be exhausted by this kind of schedule. However, the youth here seem to have endless sources of energy.

Today we have committed to spending a day in the life of a Salvadoran youth. After a long day of hard labor, which consisted of planting corn, milking and feeding cows and horses,we retired to Anthony's casa for the evening. The youth of the township follow us home and want to spend every moment they can with the, "Gringos." As we walk along, they us their best lines in English on me saying, "What's up man," over a dozen times. I can not help but laugh at he how they say this line and they too laugh heartily after saying the line.

We get back to the casa and for about 2 hours we play cards with the youth. We turn the game into a work out challenge and the player that looses out is made to do push-ups and sit-ups. After about 30 min. I call it a night.

I am fully exhausted from the day. Tonight I know that I will sleep well.

It is has been a long day. Today, I worked the fields and planted corn with a local family. Later in the day we milked the cows and feed the livestock. Tonight, Anthony and I had Arose-con leche made from the fresh cow’s milk from the cows we helped milk.

We also had the opportunity to tour a casa that is equipped with the special stove that Cops 4 Causes is helping to purchase for the families who participate in our community development program. I am amazed at how well the stoves work. As I stood in a kitchen that had been blackened by smoke of more primitive means of cooking, I could not even begin to imagine what cooking must have been like. I have heard many stories of the health complications caused by woman and children breathing in the caustic smoke caused by the primitive stoves and I have seen a few of the children that have been burned as a result of falling into the fire.

As I inspect the new stove, Anthony tells me that the stove is even OK to touch during its use. I reluctantly reach and feel the side of the stove and I am amazed by the fact that I am not being burnt. In addition to betting the health of the women who use the new stove, I am told that the new stove uses a fraction of the amount of wood then the primitive one. Coupled with the fact that each of the families who attend our Cops 4 Causes sponsored program, here in El Salvador, is planting 15 trees which will help combat deforestation here in the region, I am filled with true since of satisfaction that our organization as a whole is in the right place at the right time.

I exhausted from the day and I am on the verge of crashing out. We have to be up at 5:30 A.M. in order to make it back to the city once more for a second round of meetings. The trip in the back of the flat-bed truck is reason enough to call it a day and to rest up for what tomorrow will bring.

Cop-X-CHANGE, El Salvador: Day 6 "My Heart Will Go On"

The Salvadoran youth were excited about Cops 4 Causes visit to El Salvador and wanted to greet us with a song during our English lessons. The class chose "My Heart Will Go On" and prepared for 3 weeks before my arrival. Chase thought the class would be a little shy and timid by the fact that I was a stranger and a Cop, however the class and I became close very quickly. At the end of class, they all gathered around and serenaded me. It is a moment that will stay with me for the rest of my life. These amazing youth truly are the future of El Salvador.

Earlier in the class, Anthony gave the class instruction prior to our language game. The game consisted of the class and I selecting phrases out of a bag. The class and I then competed by attempting to translate the phrases. It was the classes English vs. my Spanish language skills. Needless to say, the class won!

Today, Anthony and I started the day early in order to catch the 6 A.M. truck back to Metapan. We arrive and meet up with two other Peace Corps volunteers who arrived at the same time Anthony did. After a plato tipico, we head to meet-up with our partners in our community outreach program to thank them for becoming involved in Cops 4 Causes / Peace Corps El Salvador project to better the health and safety of citizens of Cuyuiscat. Our first stop is to meet with member of our first International Police Agency to get involves with Cops 4 Causes International Cop X-CHANGE: Policia Nacional Civil, Metapan, Santa Ana.

We then meet with health professionals at the Unidad de Salud and then returned to Cuyuiscat to teach English to the youth. Prior to class starting, Anthony and I played volleyball with the students and meet with educators for a brief time. I was taken back by what I learned from the educators who teach at the Cuyuiscat School and about the system and sacrifices they make to teach here.

As we played volleyball, I was again intrigued by the number of red handed boys I saw. In my mind the red hand has become a symbol indicating an El Salvadorian boy who no longer has the opportunity to attend regular school. At 5 P.M. the game stops and we all enter the modest schoolhouse to a night of fun and learning.

Tonight, Anthony has arranged for the class to compete against me in a game that pits the class’ English skills against my Spanish skills. Two bags containing statements written in Spanish and English are presented to the class. The goal is to gain the most points by translating what is written in the paper in either English for then and Spanish for me. Needless to say, I did not fair very well. As a reward for the class winning Anthony and I rewarded them with chocolates I had brought from the U.S. During the game the students were surprised to learn that I am a Sheriff’s Deputy in Los Angeles.

At the end of class, the students surprised me by singing me a song that they had chosen to sing for me during my visit. The class had chosen Celine Dion’s , “My Heart Will Go On.” I sat and listened in delight as they performed the song they as been preparing for my visit. They did an amazing job and I was even further amazed when I learned that they had only begun practicing three weeks prior to my arrival. It is an honor to be serenaded by this amazing group of bright, funny, and intelligent youth and I am looking forward to our Thursday’s class already.

Cop X-CHANGE, El Salvador: Day 5

Today we arrived in Cuyuiscat. The trip was unlike any I have ever made in my lifetime. We arrived in Metapan and had just gotten off of another crazy bus ride that lasted almost 2 hours. I feel like everywhere we go that we are in a rush. Anthony tells me that, “Things don’t run the same way here as they do in the States.” There is a lose schedule of private transportation that we have to catch in order to make it to his site. There is only one truck out and one truck into his site and if we miss it, we will have to seek other arrangements for the night. We grab a quick bite on the go and then board the back of a flatbed truck for the one hour ride into the hills above Metapan to Cuyuiscat. I have not ridden in the back of a truck since I was a boy heading to McGaffey lake, in the back of my grandpa’s pick-up.

The bed of the truck is loaded down with feed for livestock, food, water and citizens of Cuyuiscat. The sky is threatening rain and at 12:00 P.M sharp we pull away from the bustling streets of Metapan headed to Anthony’s site. The ride is rough, and I begin to wonder if Secretary Of State, Hillary Clinton’s staff will chose our site for their visit to El Salvador, given its remote location? My wonder turns to doubt as we begin the heavy climbing through the unforgiving rough terrain. I find myself saying a little prayer in hopes that the persons making her arrangements are not deterred. I am really excited by our project and program here and I am sure that she would be impressed. Only time will tell.

We arrive just in time to miss being rained upon. As we walk through the door to Anthony’s casa, it suddenly begins to downpour. The casa is very modest and again I feel the same way I felt when I stepped into the hostel. I quickly get over the feeling. We set our bags down and I jump into the hammock that swings in the patio and we begin to talk about out plans for the week. Within a few hours we have our first houseguest. He is a boy, named Juan-Carlos, that lives a few casas up the road. It is my first chance to try out my Spanish. I can tell by his giggling that I am making very little since to him and that my week here is going to be a challenge. Between his giggles I notice that his right had appears to be stained red. I ask Anthony to ask him why Juan-Carlos’ hand is red. Juan-Carlos tells me that it is corn planting season.

Anthony further explains that the red pigment is caused by a poisonous pesticide that is mixed in with the corn seed. He further tells me that most boys stop school after the 6th grade, if not sooner, to take up working in the fields.

Cops X-CHANGE, EL Salvador: Day 4

After 6 hours on a bus yesterday from Antigua, Guatamala heading to Parque Imposible we finally decided to cut our travels short and stay the night in the mountain town of Juayua. I have found that the buses do not run on a set time schedule and that delays come unexpected and frequent. Wheather it be road construction or cow crossings, you start to realize that time runs differently here. The brief delays are lightened by the entourage of women and children boarding the buses to sell you fresh papaya, pupusas, and other amazing fare (by the way, pupusas are increiblemente riquisimo).

The rides through the country side are thrilling. The scenery is breathtaking, predicated by moments of terror as our crazy bus driver barrels up and down the twisty roads at what seems like a hundred miles an hour.

I woke up this morning and went for a jog with our Peace Corps volunteer, Chase. We ran through a tropical rain forest to a place know as "Los Chorros De Juayua". There, fresh spring water gushed out the mountain side from its underground water source and cascaded down to turqoise pools below. The water was cool and refreshing. I stood there in awe of the landscape and could only wonder what it was like for the first men who wondered these forrests.After a quick shower in the falls we finished our run and at a "plato tipico" for breakfast: juevos picados, frijoles líquidos, y platano frito. I can only wonder at what today will bring as we make our way to Chase´s site to begin work tomorrow.

Cop X- Change, El Salvador: Day 3

Morning:

It is a beautiful morning. As I step out onto the step of our hostel, I see the massive yellow and white cathedral that sits directly across the street. It looks like a huge cake. The streets are starting to come to life. After a hearty traditional breakfast, Anthony and I head out for a tour of the city. Antigua is as beautiful as the sunrise. The city is filled with cobble stone streets lined by brightly colored yellow, red, green, blue and white walls. The walls have grand gates with smaller doorway accesses. Each of the doors leads to an enchanted oasis. It is an enchanted city. Anthony reminds me that our site is nothing like the surrounding area. Prior to reporting to his site, he wants to show me the lay of the land…rich in culture, tradition and natural beauty.

Afternoon:

Our afternoon is spent climbing one of four volcano’s that frames the city of Antigua. The climb is majestic. As we near the top of our climb, our group of international traveler’s gasp in awe at the sight of molten lava flowing down the side of the volcano. Our tour guide takes us higher and right to the edge of the lava flow. The heat is intense. Yet, I find myself drawn in like a moth to a flame. This is amazing! The day is only made sweeter by the joy of sharing lava toasted marshmallows with my new little Guatemalan friend, Jose.

Day 1 & 2: LA to El Salvador

I left my house tonight around 8 P.M. and headed to the Inmate Reception Center to pick–up my camera, which had been dropped off by my good friend Amber Veatch. I would have thought that I would have been finished packing for this journey hours ago but managed to get sidetracked in my attempt to step away from the world as I know it. This is my first time to El Salvador and Anthony, my Peace Corps site manager, has limited my packing to one backpack. This is the lightest I have ever packed for a 20 day trip in my life...who am I kidding I usually pack two suitcases and a carry on case for a weekend get-a-way. I have great expectations for this trip and for Cops 4 Causes' first International Aid mission. I have no idea what to expect but I am excited about the opportunity to meet with other Cops from a developing nation and to help them connect with the residents of Cuyuiscat.

Check in goes off without a hitch and thus far it is smooth sailing. I board a plane headed for Atlanta, Georgia. It is 11:15 P.M. and we have been cleared for take-off. The flight is smooth and I slept through most of it. I awoke to the flight attendant politely tapping me and asking me to place my chair in the upright position and to prepare for landing. I smile and ask, "What time it is locally?" She replies that the local time is 6:00 A.M. After we land I grab my backpack, which contains everything I own on this trip and head to the flight lounge for the 3 hour layover.

I have been told that I will not have very much access to the Internet when I get to El Salvador. I am already having techno-withdraws and seek out my last fix prior to the flight that will take me to Central America. Cops 4 Causes has a lot going on right now and I feel that I need to be present to assist, but I know that deep down that I have nothing to worry about. Two weeks ago we added 4 bright, intelligent, caring, and capable members to our board of directors (Jonathan Pinto, Amber Veatch, Shawn Kehoe and Brook Marshall). They will be heading our new membership drive and preparation for our upcoming summer benefits, “Comedy Uniting Communities,” at the World Famous Laugh Factory, Hollywood.

I finish up a few loose ends and then head to the reception desk to ensure that I know where my gate is located. I am told gate I-5, however upon my arrival I notice that the flight information board is flashing “San Salvador.” I enquire to ensure that this is the flight for “Guatemala”, however I am told that I am at the wrong gate and that I should be at gate I-32. I look down at my watch to check the time and at the same time the gate attendant begins to tell me that I will not make my flight. Before she is able to finish her sentence I am already bolting towards the correct gate. I think to myself that I can’t miss this flight. The next flight is to El Salvador doesn’t leave for 24 hours, I have no way to contact my Peace Corps host and for the first time I feel that the mission is in jeopardy.

Like a seasoned running back I weave my way at full speed through the pedestrian traffic. As I approach gate I-23 the 20 days of packing strapped to my back become extremely noticeable. My backpack weighs approximately 30 lbs. but feels like 100. As I approach gate I-32, I see the doors to the ramp closing. In what feels like a slow motion scene in a movie, I call out begging for the door to remain open. My breath is labored and each step feels heavier that the last. The door closes and inside I know that the gate attendant is going to deny access to the aircraft. I am flush with defeat and I begin to plead my case, however I am told that once the flight is closed that they are not allowed to let any other passengers on the plane. I can tell from her tone that she is not one to change her mind no matter what the circumstance.

I end up standing in a line of angry passengers who have all had their flight canceled and I can’t help but be annoyed at my circumstance. I finally get an audience with the travel agent and tell her about the mix up. I can tell that I am just another story in a long line of a million sad stories she hears everyday. She informs me that I will have to wait till tomorrow for the next flight. I respond that I don’t care if she has to reroute me through “Asia,” as long as I arrive in El Salvador today. She makes me wait for what seems like an eternity. I actually believe that she might have actually taken me literally about the Asia comment. She finally looks up and tells me that there is one last flight but I will have to connect in Texas. I find it almost comical that she says Texas as if I was actually going to have to connect in some far off Asian city.

I take the flight and within an hour I am back in the game and off to the, “Lone Star State.” I arrive and spend the day in the President's Club meeting some of the most interesting people and getting to know their stories. I tell them about our mission and about Cops 4 Causes. I have a feeling that we may have a few new supporters of our vision and mission. All things happen for a reason and if we allow ourselves to remain open to the reasons, it all makes since in the end.

I arrive in Guatemala and catch a cab to Antigua. Upon arrival I meet with our Peace Corps volunteer, Anthony. It is the first time in my life that I have stayed at a hostel and I am really taken back by the accommodations. It is raining cats and dogs outside. Inside our room it is almost as bad. A puddle is massing in the middle of the room from the leaky roof above. I look further into the room and see 4 bunk beds. On the outside I am calm but on the inside I am in a panic.

Anthony senses my worry and says to me, “it will pass.” His smile eases my apprehension and we pay the $7.00 for the room which includes breakfast in the morning.

I throw down my backpack, take a deep breath and think about our mission to help improve the health and safety of the citizens of Cuyuiscat. I close my eyes and I am thankful for being here in El Salvador.

International Cop X-CHANGE El Salvador

Cops 4 Causes President, Deputy Christopher T. Landavazo, visits Cuyuiscat, El Salvador (May 13 – May 27, 2009) for Cops 4 Causes’ first International Cops X-CHANGE aid initiative.

Cops 4 Causes has joined the team of international players that include the United States Peace Corps, USAID, Living Waters for the World, Rotary International, Stove Team International, Trees People Water, to aid in the sustainable development of Cuyuiscat. The project currently underway is a unique mission that will impact the lives of those most affected by life-altering circumstances in the developing world. In what will be a community wide effort to mitigate preventable disease, injury, and negative environmental impact, Cops 4 Causes is sponsoring this effort via its International Cop X-CHANGE program.

Prospective families will be invited to attend a week-long seminar sponsored by Cops 4 Causes that will cover topics most close to Salvadoran life: family nutrition, basic hygiene, domestic violence, immigration and family life, woman’s health and sex education. Seminars will be taught by local law enforcement, health professionals and in-country NGO’s with the aim of creating community awareness.

Families who successfully complete the seminar will be rewarded with one Ecocina stove produce by Stove Team International. The families will also take part in planting 1000 trees that produce a maya nut which will help to nourish members of the community while decreasing deforestation and also help to establish a micro business venture for the women of Cuyuiscat.
